How Two Completely Different Shirts Become One

One of my favorite parts of making upcycled clothing is choosing which shirts belong together.

When I thrift, I'm not always looking for one perfect shirt. I'm thinking about what each piece could become. A graphic tee might have a great design but not be something I'd wear as-is. A flannel might have beautiful colors but feel plain on its own. Put the right two together, and they suddenly make sense.

Graphics are one of the first things I notice when I'm thrifting.

Sometimes the design is a character, brand, seasonal image, joke, or something nostalgic. Other times, I just like the way it looks. Once I find a graphic I like, I think about its colors, mood, and personality. That helps me find the right shirt to pair with it.

Matching doesn't always mean using the exact same colors.

Sometimes I choose a flannel that brings out one small color in the graphic. Other times, I use colors that work well together or create contrast. A bright graphic can look great with a dark flannel. A colorful plaid can make a simple black-and-white design more interesting.

Two shirts can match in color but still feel wrong together. That's when I think about the overall feeling of each piece. There isn't a perfect formula. Sometimes two shirts simply look like they belong together.

Sometimes I buy a graphic and wait for the right match. Sometimes I buy a flannel because I love the colors. Sometimes both pieces sit in my collection until they find a match.

That's the moment I love. Somewhere between the thrift store and my sewing machine, two different shirts become something new. And eventually, that one-of-a-kind piece finds the person it was meant for.
