Things I Almost Always Pick Up While Thrifting
I wish I could say I thrift with a list and only buy what I need. That is not how I thrift.
Most of the time, I'm looking for potential. Certain colors, patterns, graphics, fabrics, and craft supplies are very hard for me to leave behind. Plaid is one of my biggest weaknesses. I love finding secondhand shirts with unusual colors, oversized patterns, soft fabric, or a print that would pair well with something I already have.
Do I always know what I'll make with it?
No.
Is that going to stop me from buying it?
Also no.

Graphics are another favorite.
Characters, funny sayings, nostalgic designs, sports, destinations, and seasonal prints will always get my attention. The shirt itself doesn't have to be perfect. If the graphic is good, I can probably use it in something else. That's one of my favorite parts of upcycling: an item doesn't have to be perfect as-is to have potential.
I love florals, retro patterns, bright colors, and unusual prints.
Sometimes I want the whole shirt. Other times, one small section of fabric is enough to make me think, I could use that.
Once I start imagining possibilities, it's usually coming home with me.

I always check the craft section for beads, ribbon, yarn, fabric, stamps, paper, and other supplies. Thrifted craft supplies are often cheaper, and they can inspire ideas I wouldn't have thought of otherwise. I love turning supplies someone else no longer wanted into something new.
Then there are the things I can't explain but can't leave behind.
Maybe it's a strange object, an old frame, a jar, a bag of beads, or a piece of fabric. I may not know what it will become, but I see potential in it. Some of my favorite projects have started that way.
So yes, I probably have more fabric, graphics, beads, buttons, and supplies than I need. But you never know when a $2 thrifted find will become your next favorite project.
