Why I Choose to Upcycle

People often ask why I choose to upcycle instead of buying brand-new materials.

The truth is, it didn't start because I was trying to be sustainable. It started because it was simply what I could afford.

I've been creative for as long as I can remember. Whether I was making friendship bracelets, knitting, or trying a new craft, I was always creating something. When I was in college, paper crafts became one of my favorite mediums because paper was affordable and easy to find. In fact, I loved working with paper so much that I even made the flowers for my own wedding bouquet by hand—the same bouquet you see in the cover image of this blog. Looking back, I realize that creating with affordable materials has always been part of who I am.

As I explored new hobbies, I found myself using whatever materials I already had or could find secondhand.

Instead of seeing those limitations as a challenge, I learned to see them as an opportunity.

Over time, upcycling became more than a budget-friendly way to create—it became part of how I see the world. I love the process of taking pieces from different places and transforming them into something completely new. A thrifted flannel, an old graphic tee, or leftover craft supplies might not look like much on their own, but together they can become something unique that brings someone joy.

That's one of my favorite parts about creating. No two pieces are exactly alike, and every project has a story before it even reaches my craft table.

Upcycling reminds me that creativity isn't about having the newest supplies. Sometimes it's about looking at what's already in front of you and imagining what it could become.

For me, that's where the magic happens.
